Career Planning Interventions

All Grade Levels: Career Planning and Decision-Making Skills

  • Educational and Career Planning Resource Materials are updated annually. Hard copy and video materials are available to students and parents for overnight and three-day checkout.
  • Individual Career Guidance and Career Development Services are available to students and parents by appointment.
  • A Current Events and Job Openings Bulletin Board is located outside the Career Resources Center. Postings include SAT/ACT dates, guidance and career planning workshops, college visits, part-time job opportunities, etc.
  • Vocational/Technical Information and Opportunities are advertised on WCAT and displayed in the Career Center. Brochures are available for Santa Fe Community College Dual-Enrollment, Alachua County Magnet School and Academy Programs, Santa Fe Community College/University of Florida Tech-Prep Options, US Military Service and more.
  • Career Shadowing, a "one-on-one" pairing of a student with a community professional, is advertised from November-January. February 2nd is "Career Shadow Day."
  • Post-Secondary Educational and Career Exploration includes the maintenance of College Videos and Catalogue Files, hosting of college representatives, and educational and career-related field trips.
  • "Cracking the ACT/SAT/PLAN/PSAT" - a computerized standardized test practice and remediation program is available in the Career Resource Center before school or during the school day by appointment.

9th Grade: Awareness

  • Introduction to Education and Career Planning. Classroom guidance and career orientation modules are implemented in early fall. These activities focus on the role of career planning in high school and throughout life transitions.

10th Grade: Exploration

  • College and Career Outlook Seminar. This classroom presentation explores the various two and four year college degrees. It highlights the academic preparation required for various career paths, and examines the SAT/ACT preparation and testing processes. A college testing (Princeton Review) preparation workshop is offered in the fall and again after spring break.
  • The ACT / PLAN is administered and interpreted. This is a preview version of the ACT College Admissions exam. The UNIACT Interest Inventory is included in this program. A powerpoint presentation introduces students to personal preferences and skills as they relate to Career Clusters and employment perspectives.
  • College bound students are provided the opportunity to complete a computerized college search. Several individual institutions are extensively researched. This activity assists students in considering factors that may be important in their past-secondary educational plans. Final college plans are addressed in 12th grade.

11th Grade: Career Exploration and Selection

  • Implementation and Interpretation of ACT/DISCOVER. This computer-assisted career exploration program is implemented in November. It is used to compare scores to 10th grade test results, adding consistency and validity to the testing process. Students select career preferences and are able to research career choices.
  • Administration and Interpretation of the ASVAB. The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery is an academic and vocational aptitude test which is excellent practice for the SAT/ACT college entrance exams. The test is administered in October. Scores are interpreted in early November.
  • Administration and Interpretation of EXPLORING CAREERS. This student workbook provides an interest inventory, career planning guide, and financial aid analysis to students the ASVAB.
  • ACT/DISCOVER College, Financial Aid, and Scholarship Searches. These programs assist students in selecting colleges and locating financial aid. Individual personal data is used to match students with opportunities that meet specific educational, financial, and personal preferences. Students may sign-up on an individual basis to use these resources.
  • Career Skills Unit. This unit includes Resume Writing, Job Application and Phone and Personal Job Interview techniques. It is implemented through junior English classes in the spring.

12th Grade: Experience

  • Financial Aid Seminar. This classroom presentation outlines financial aid and scholarship processes. Handouts, website addresses, and resource materials are distributed to all seniors. It is implemented through American Government and Economics classes in September/October.
  • Career Related Field Trips. Seniors have the opportunity to attend the University of Florida "Career Expo," University of Florida College of Engineering Open House, University of Florida College of Engineering Shadow Day, Santa Fe Community College Campus Tour, NHRAS Gatornationals, and more.
  • Scholarship Resource Binder and Vertical File. A 3-ring binder of scholarship "abstracts" is housed in every senior English and Social Studies class as well as in the Media Center and guidance office. It is updated weekly. Original application packets are filed in the Student Services reception area. They are copied at no charge to students.
  • College Applications. Santa Fe Community College, University of Florida and applications for universities of the State of Florida are available in the Career Center and Student Services reception area. Students may use the Career Lab to access college websites and download applications.
  • Students who have not completed career inventories or researched career options should plan to complete these activities their senior year. Individual career-planning conferences are strongly suggested for students who have no serious career plans as yet.
