As a high school student in Alachua County, you have that opportunity. The Academy of Finance began in 1994 at Buchholz High School. In 1996, the Academy was awarded magnet status so that students who live anywhere within the school district may share this vision. This program, now in its second decade, prepares students for careers in business and finance. Instruction includes the use of professional software, electronic equipment and Internet resources, and is affiliated with the National Academy Foundation. The Academy of Finance offers challenging classes which include the use of professional software, electronic equipment, and Internet resources. Students are placed in internships with financial service companies and have opportunities to learn about accounting, insurance, banking and credit, financial computing, international investments, financial planning and securities. You may save money and time by completing all the required courses in the Academy of Finance. Accelerated placement and college credit in the Division of Technology and Applied Sciences at Santa Fe Community College is awarded to students who complete the program with a B or higher. Students can get advanced placement credit and earn up to twelve credit hours at Santa Fe Community College. Scholarships are also available for students who earn a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and a 3.5 GPA in Academy of Finance courses. One such scholarship, sponsored by the Citigroup Foundation, is exclusive to Academy students and carries a stipend of $5,000 a year for four years as well as a paid internship. By taking a planned sequences of higher level academic and technical courses, you will be involved in "hands-on" activities that will be useful for successful employment and for further education. Opportunities to explore career options in financial services include interaction with professional men and women who are actively involved in investing, lending, banking, insurance, and real estate. After satisfactorily completing the academic requirements in your junior year, you may participate in a summer internship and assume entry level responsibilities in a financial services company. The NAF develops curriculum materials, provides professional development for teachers and directors, and evaluates Academy programs for quality of instruction. They establish partnerships between private industry and educators in order to provide quality education for high school students as preparation for careers and college. You should apply to the Academy of Finance in your eighth or ninth grade year. The deadline for application is February 15th, but it is recommended you apply as soon as possible. You must submit a completed application signed by parents or guardians, three letters of recommendation from your teachers, and a copy of your transcript; you will receive notification of your status by late April.
